SIBU, March 21: Sibu Rural District Council’s (SRDC) long-term solution to accommodate more traders at its Stapang market is to build an extension for the premises.

Its deputy chairman Wong Ching Yong in a statement said the project needs funding from the government through the local assemblyman to make it a reality.

“We went to the market yesterday and were told that it is too small and many farmers have difficulties with finding places to sell their agricultural products during weekends especially on Sundays,” he said.

He said after inspection, all councillors present unanimously agreed that another canopy should be installed with urgency as a temporary measure to accommodate these farmers.

“The long-term solution is to build an extension to the existing tamu. but this needs funding from the YB. The Council’s Engineering section is requested to do a cost estimate for this project and we will forward the estimate to the YB for his perusal,” said Wong.

They had also at the same time visited a nearby abandoned hawker centre.

Wong said all councillors present for the visit agreed that this abandoned hawker centre should be revamped and turned it into a tamu/refurbished hawker centre.

Wong added that Tamin assemblyman, Christopher Gira had agreed to allocate funds to refurbish the dilapidated hawker centre. — DayakDaily
