KUCHING, April 18: The Spartan Race Sarawak 2022 will return on June 11-12 and place Sarawak on the map as an international tourist destination, said Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.
Speaking during a press conference held this morning in Bangunan Baitulmakmur II, he said that the event, which is expected to attract participants from all over the region, will be held at the Agricultural Institute of Sarawak and the Leadership Institute of Sarawak Civil Service in Semenggok.
He went on to say that as of today, 1,058 participants have signed up for the event, which targets 2,500 participants.
“This race was originally planned for April 2020, but it was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic,” he said.
“The one that we organised in 2019 has been hailed as the toughest Spartan race in Southeast Asia due to the terrain at the Sarawak Agriculture Institute.
“This year’s race will be no different and will feature the two most popular categories, the 5km Sprint (20 obstacles) and 10km Super (25 obstacles).
“Only those who complete the race will earn the 2022 Spartan finisher shirt and medal, along with the right to be called a Spartan warrior,” said Abdul Karim.
He added that a Spartan Asia Pacific Owners and Racers Summit conference would also be held in connection with the event, which is expected to see participants from Japan, China, Korea, Singapore, the Philippines, and Malaysia.
“Those who have registered for the Spartan Race Sarawak 2020 will be eligible to transfer and defer their tickets to this year’s race by emailing info@my.spartan.com.

Meanwhile, he stated that The Borneo Trail Classic, a part of the Spartan Trail World Championship Series (STWC) stop, will be held in Sarawak on Oct 14-16.
It will feature nine stops worldwide, and the Borneo Trail Classic is the only stop in Asia.
The Borneo Trail Classic will be held at the Redeems Centre in Kampung Apar, Kuching. Participants will race through jungles, hills, and rivers to the finish line.
He said that the Borneo Trail Classic would host two world championship race categories: the 50km Trail and the 100km Trail Ultra with a total prize purse of over USD 18,000.
