SERIAN, Jan 9: The southern zone comprising Kuching, Serian and Samarahan divisions will be sending 367 athletes and staff for Sarawak Games (Suksa) 2024 in Sibu scheduled for Jan 15 till 18 with the hope of retaining the overall champion title.
The contingent, headed by Serian Resident Caroline Cleophas Joseph will depart for Sibu this Saturday (Jan 13) and will familiarise themselves with the venues before the start of the games.
At a press conference at her office here today, Caroline revealed she had high confidence that the southern zone will reign as the champion again.
“For this 3rd Edition of Suksa, the southern zone is sending 293 athletes and 74 staff with a high hope of becoming the champion again that was achieved during the previous games,” she told reporters after chairing a meeting on the final preparation for the games.
During the previous Suksa, the southern zone team captured 55 gold, 46 silver and 31 bronze medals to become the champion, she said.
“For this Suksa, our athletes are both talented and young and we hope to become champion again” she pointed out, adding that some of their athletes are still in secondary school.
Caroline also said that the team will participate in all 13 events.
The contested events are weightlifting, cycling, basketball, volleyball, futsal, hockey, judo, karate, pencak silat, taekwondo, tinju and wushu. — DayakDaily
