KUCHING, Aug 3: South Korean firm OCI Holdings is planning to invest an additional RM2.8 billion in Sarawak to bolster the production of polysilicon for the semiconductor sector.
OCI Holdings chairman Lee Woo Hyun communicated this to Deputy Sarawak Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan during a meeting at the company’s corporate headquarters in Seoul, South Korea yesterday (Aug 2).
According to a press statement today, the South Korea-based chemical company has already invested over RM8 billion in Sarawak to produce polysilicon for the solar industry and related expansion undertakings.
OCI has also collaborated with Kumho Petro Chemical Group in a joint project valued at RM1.7 billion to produce epichlorohydrin (ECH) through the utilisation of hydroelectric power with bio-glycerin and natural salts.
During the visit, Sarawak Energy Group chief operating officer James Ung handed over an assurance letter to OCIM Sdn Bhd president Choi Sung Gil for the phased allocation of power to accommodate the company’s investment within Sarawak.
Awang Tengah, who is also Minister for International Trade, Industry, and Investment (Mintred) conveyed profound gratitude to OCI for their investments and welcome them to explore opportunities as Sarawak moves towards green energy and new economy advancements.
Appreciation was also extended to OCI for their commendable corporate social responsibility initiatives in Sarawak, notably for the installation of solar panels in several schools which in turn also raise awareness on the development of green energy in the region.
The Sarawak delegation also visited and toured the OCI Research and Development Centre that delves into the next generation development for the energy sector.
Ambassador of Malaysia to the Republic of Korea Datuk Lim Juay Jin, Deputy Mintred Minister Datuk Dr Malcolm Mussen Lamoh, advisor to Mintred Datuk Mohd Naroden Majais, permanent secretary to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Urban Development Datu Zaidi Mahdi, Land and Survey Department director Datu Abdullah Julaihi, Regional Corridor Development Authority (Recoda) chief executive officer Datu Ismawi Ismuni, and Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros) vice president for upstream Jeremy Wong were among the delegation. — DayakDaily
