KUCHING, Sept 30: Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Chung Hua Miri has emerged as champion in the Robo Sports category at World Robot Olympiad (WRO) Open Championship 2024 which was held in Brescia, Italy, from Sept 25–28.
According to a press release, the “UP UP” robotics team was represented by Elson Kieu Chee Yang, Sim Zhi Yang and Sasha Liz Liew. They were accompanied by their coach Lai Jia Ling.
Supported by Sarawak’s Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD), the school’s robotics team was among 238 participating teams from 47 nations.
Apart from “UP UP” team, there were two other teams from Sarawak, which were among the six teams in total representing Malaysia at the championship.
They were Institute of Teacher Education Miri Campus (IPGM) which placed second in the Senior Robo Mission category and Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina (SJKC) Chung Hua Miri which finished sixth in the Robo Mission Elementary category.
The IPGM’s team named “I-Roboreg” was represented by Chang Pei Ru, Muhammad Asy Syakirin Razlan and Desmond Sii Chong Sheng. Their coaches were Dr Hu Laey Nee and Dr Norsarihan Ahmad.
Meanwhile, the “Meigong” team from SJKC Chung Hua Miri comprised Kieran Chia Yuen Soong, Kingsley Yeo Eng Sing and Shermaine Yong Ee Shuen. They were accompanied by coach Wong Ma Li.
On other teams from Malaysia, the “Z1 Phoenix” team from Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Zainab 1, Kota Bharu, Kelantan placed 37th in the Robo Mission Elementary category; “Al-Khawarizmi” from Maahad Islahiah Addiniah, Sitiawan, Perak placed 23rd in Robo Mission Junior category; and “IPG-Robotech” from IPG Kampus Pendidikan Teknik, Nilai, Negeri Sembilan finished in 29th position in the Robo Mission Senior category.
WRO is a global robotics competition for students aged 8 to 19, aimed at promoting robotics education in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). The competition features four categories: Robo Mission, Robo Sports, Future Innovators, and Future Engineers.
