SIBU, July 26: Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) hopes to reduce the number of stray dogs in the city by outsourcing dog catching duties to private contractors.
Council chairman Clarence Ting said in view of the threat posed by rabies, the council would have to outsource the animal catching work to two private contractors.
“In Sibu, we have many people bitten by dogs, and fortunately they do not get rabies but the danger is there, so we need to put a stop to such incidents as soon as possible,” he said at the council’s full board meeting today.
He explained that the council needs private contractors as getting the authority to approve its application for another team would take a long time.
The council’s only dog catching team catches between 90 to 200 dogs a month, a number that Ting hopes to increase to decrease the number of strays.
As most dogs roaming in the streets and roads have owners, he urged pet owners to keep their animals indoors.
“For any dog that we catch, we will not release them and the owners also cannot claim them,” he warned. — DayakDaily
