KUCHING, April 20: Two positive rabies cases involving dogs have been confirmed this week (April 14–17) — one in Kampung Sungai Belian, Lundu, and another in Sungai Moyan, Batu Kawa.
Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng disclosed the cases during his weekly ‘Shall Wee Talk’ Facebook live session yesterday (April 19), citing a report from the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) Sarawak.
“The first case involved a stray dog bite in Kampung Sungai Belian, Lundu. The second case was from a pet dog in Sungai Moyan, Batu Kawa,” he said.
Wee further noted that MBKS had recently conducted a dog vaccination programme, preparing 1,000 doses and successfully vaccinating about 700 dogs in one session.
“The results were quite encouraging — certainly better than previous rounds,” he said, adding that the council has already conducted two anti-rabies vaccination drives this year, with three more scheduled in the months ahead.
“This is your chance. If you missed the last rounds, please check our MBKS Facebook page for upcoming dates and locations. Vaccination must be done yearly,” he urged.
Wee also highlighted the importance of community participation in fighting rabies, reminding pet owners to act responsibly. — DayakDaily
