KUCHING, May 28: Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg says the bills tabled at this Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting are aimed at providing benefits to all, rather than favouring any single party.

According to the Premier, six bills were passed at this DUN sitting. These bills include the Supplementary Supply (2024) Bill, 2025; Supplementary Supply (2025) Bill, 2025; Sarawak Biodiversity Centre (Amendment) Bill, 2025; Land Code (Amendment) Bill, 2025; Local Authorities (Amendment) Bill, 2025; and Infrastructure Development Trust Fund (Dissolution) Bill, 2025.

In particular, the Premier highlighted important amendments to the Land Code and the biodiversity law.

“Among those that have had an impact on our economy is the amendment to the Land Code which allows for the registration of wakaf land as well as land given by the owner to the general public or charitable bodies,” he said in his speech at the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) Backbenchers Appreciation Night held at the DUN Complex last night.

With this amendment, he said, the granting of land on a trust basis can be legally recognised and registered.

“This is not a matter of religion. It is an administrative system that allows us to register land and manage it more systematically. We are also using digitalisation, so many land transactions now use digital documents,” he explained.

Also passed was the biodiversity law which opens up space for the commercialisation of research results, particularly by the Sarawak Biodiversity Centre (SBC).

“It was not allowed before. Now SBC can hold equity in companies that stem from research such as algae. This is important so that our research results have commercial value and are not exploited by outside parties,” he said. – DayakDaily
