KUCHING, Oct 23: Singapore has shown intention to bulk purchase ‘tenun’ fabric and ‘baju dabong’ from Sarawak, says Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Doulgas Uggah Embas.

He said he had received inquiries from Singapore asking whether Sarawak could produce these products in large quantities.

Uggah is therefore hoping to produce more skilled and accomplished Iban ‘tenun’ weavers and ‘baju dabong’ tailors in Bukit Saban.

“But we need to further upgrade their skills first. We will look for teachers who can polish up their skills to allow them produce special high quality products.

“We will look at sewing machines that can help them with the quantity and quality,” he said in a statement today.

Uggah, who is also Bukit Saban assemblyman, gave assurance he would help the locals with marketing their products.

Meanwhile, Uggah’s wife Dato Doreen Mayang who is an initiator and promoter of weaving and tailoring courses said some 250 women from Bukit Saban had been trained since 2017.

She said efforts were being made to recruit more teachers to train even more locals. — DayakDaily
