KUCHING, Nov 17: SUPP Stakan branch chairman Datuk Sim Kiang Chiok asserted that opposition parties are seeking opportunities for political mileage as well as confusing the public in opposing the recent amendment to the Sarawak Constitution.

He emphasised the said amendment which was passed at the recent Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting was to tighten and not open doors for non-Sarawakians to be candidates in state elections in the future.

He also criticised the example of Putri which the opposition has used to make its case.

“The example quoted by the opposition to say the third generation “Putri” is eligible is misleading as her mother “Leila” is considered a Malayan even though she was born in Sarawak .

“Further, Putri is considered a Malayan as with the recent amendment in our Constitution, she will not be eligible to be a candidate in our state election,” he emphasised in a statement.

Sim opined the best opportunity for the opposition to debate the amendment was before the law was passed in DUN recently.

He opined that the best person to debate with should be the promoter or the proposal of the amendment to the Sarawak Constitution who is Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

“Why now ask for a debate again and not with the promoter? Why waste the ink and paper the invitation to debate was printed on or waste the Internet data it was shared through our phones?,” he questioned. — DayakDaily
