KUCHING, April 26: Sarawak has the potential to play a role in the national defense industry based on its strides in economic development, says Lieutenant General Datuk Mohd Sofi Md Lepi, commander of the Army Eastern Field Command (PMTTD).

According to a news report from the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) today, Mohd Sofi said this is possible because Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg is also open to ideas in strengthening the defense sector in Sarawak in addition to advancing the state’s economy.

ā€œWe feel very lucky because through the Sarawak Defense Package offered by Abang Johari, it helps us to acquire equipment with the latest technology,ā€ he told reporters when met after a courtesy visit to Head of the State Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar at Astana Negeri Sarawak today.

Meanwhile, Mohd Sofi said during the visit, Dr Wan Junaidi also expressed his wish for the defense sector in Sarawak to be improved, which will contribute to the improvement of national defense.

ā€œWith Dr Wan Juhaidi’s wish, and with the development in Bintulu as well as in Sarawak in terms of the hydrogen economy and so on, I am confident that the Sarawak government has a big plan to contribute to the national defense industry,ā€ said.

Other than that, Mohd Sofi said the purpose of the courtesy visit was to invite Dr Wan Junaidi to attend the 18th Edition of Defense Service Asia (DSA) which will be held at Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (Mitec) in Kuala Lumpur from May 6-9. ā€” DayakDaily
