KUCHING, Aug 14: Water supply restoration in Sibu has been delayed after an unexpected valve malfunction hit the system shortly after major repairs to a main pipeline were completed early today.
In a statement, Sarawak Water said the 1,000 mm-diameter main pipeline near Lorong Kiew Nang 1 had been repaired, but supply could not be immediately restored to all affected consumers, as the distribution system needed time to refill and pressure to be gradually rebuilt.
The situation was further complicated when a 600mm-diameter delivery valve at the Salim Water Treatment Plant malfunctioned during the restoration process.
“Repair work on the valve is under way and is expected to be completed between 1pm and 3pm today. However, consumers should not expect water supply to return to normal immediately after the valve repair,” said the utility provider.
Sarawak Water said restoration would be carried out progressively as the distribution network refills and pressure stabilises, meaning some areas will receive supply earlier than others.
About 15,000 consumer accounts are expected to continue experiencing temporary water interruptions or low pressure during the recovery.
Affected areas include parts of Jalan Tun Ahmad Zaidi Adruce, Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman, Sibu Airport, Sibu Jaya, Jalan Durin Link up to Durin Bridge, as well as several residential areas and communities along the Sibu-Bintulu junction.
Sarawak Water has deployed water tankers to affected areas to provide temporary assistance while repair and restoration work continue.
Consumers have also been warned that some households may experience low water pressure or discoloured water as the system stabilises. Those affected by discoloured water are advised to let their taps run until the water becomes clear before use.
