SIBU, Aug 13: Water supply will be disrupted, and water pressure may drop across 23 areas in Sibu tonight following the bursting of a 1,000mm main water pipeline at Lorong Kiew Nang 1, affecting about 15,000 registered consumer accounts.
In a statement today, Sarawak Water said it was investigating the circumstances surrounding the burst, which occurred near ongoing contract works.
The affected areas include Jalan Tun Ahmad Zaidi Adruce, from the Jalan Salim intersection to Lorong 60–66, including the Petronas station; Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman, including Lorong Tunku Abdul Rahman 42; Rh. Sebastian; Jalan Rafflesia; Jalan Jade Villa; Taman Primeview; Taman Azalea; and Taman Sanhill.
Also affected are Sibu Airport and Eco Garden, Sibu Jaya, Jalan Durin Link to Durin Bridge, Jalan Satria, Jalan Bumi Indah, Jalan Ruai, Jalan Bougenvilla, Jalan Kaland, Jalan Pine, Taman Kemuyang, Rascom Camp, Rh. Nari, the Sibu-Bintulu junction and surrounding areas.
Sarawak Water has mobilised its emergency response and technical teams to the site and is working with the contractor to carry out the necessary repairs.
Repair works are targeted for completion by about 4am tomorrow (Aug 14), subject to site conditions and progress.
Water supply restoration will begin after the repairs and will take place progressively as the distribution system is repressurised.
Consumers further along the distribution network and those in higher-elevation areas may experience a longer recovery period before water pressure returns to normal.
Sarawak Water also warned that some consumers may experience temporary water discolouration during the initial restoration period due to changes in water flow and pressure within the distribution system.
Flushing and water quality monitoring will be carried out where necessary as the system stabilises.
Sarawak Water said its immediate priority was to complete the repairs safely and restore water supply to affected consumers as quickly as possible.
