SIBU, Mar 4: Sibu Division reported a 72.86 per cent increase in the crime index, from 140 cases to 242 cases this year for the period Jan 1 to March 3.
All these cases involved violent crime and property crime.
Sibu District Chief of Police (ACP) Stanley Jonathan Ringgit said today that the increase was due to the hike in the number of theft, housebreaking cases as well as robbery without firearms.
“All three types of cases have contributed to the sharp rise in the crime index for the first two months of the year,” he said after the monthly parade.
He said 112 cases of robbery were recorded between Jan 1 and March 3 this year compared to just 27 cases in the same period last year.
Stanley added that housebreaking case also recorded an increase of 19.23 per cent (62) cases as of March 3 this year compared to 52 cases in the same period last year while 12 cases of robbery were recorded compared to just two cases in the same period last year.
“So far a total of 86 people were arrested for various offenses during the Jan 1 to March 3 years compared to 141 in the same period last year,” he added.
During this period a total of 132 criminal cases had been solved compared to 128 cases in the same period last year.
However, he said the security situation in the city was under control.
“We will work harder to strengthen our resolve to deliver more effective services in order to create a safe and comfortable environment in this area in the future,” he said.
He said this at a monthly gathering at the Sibu IPD Cemetery this morning. —DayakDaily
