Sibu Court Complex maintains calm atmosphere amid riot case hearing

SIBU, Oct 27: Sibu District Police Chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili confirmed that the atmosphere at the Sibu Court Complex remained calm today.

He reported that no groups of individuals gathered outside the court, as a team of policemen had been deployed to ensure security since early in the morning.

“Patrolling the Sibu Court Complex is a crime prevention operation assignment and everything was under control with sufficient manpower in this assignment,” he said when contacted.

He was asked to comment on the situation outside the Sibu Court Complex following the riot case in Kanowit being brought to Sibu court for the hearing of the case.

He said members of the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) Sibu were always ready to ensure public order.

The Court today adjourned the hearing of the riot case in Machan, Kanowit to Nov 21.

However, the media was not told in detail about the reason for the postponement of the case.

The riot happened on Aug 7, 2023, at about 4.30pm at a restaurant in Machan, Kanowit involving a total of eight accused persons.

Johnny Lau, Tie Sing Tai, Kevin Lau Pick King, Alvin Tang Chan Siew, Dave Wong Yang Dao, Jonwin Umpi, Willis Inggol Jonwin, and Brandon Lee Kah Xin, were charged under Section 148 of the Penal Code read together with Section 34 of the same Code.
