SIBU, June 23: A contractor from Sibu faces the risk of being blacklisted for rejecting a school project to build a multipurpose court fence, despite winning the contract through a lottery draw.

Following the contractor’s refusal to proceed with the project, Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng said that contractors who have been awarded the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) should be more responsible.

“It is understood that the contractor refused to implement the RTP project in this school due to disagreement with the cost.

“But they (the contractor) have participated in the voting session and were awarded this project by the implementing agency of the Sibu Municipal Court (SMC) in early May,” said Chieng.

According to Chieng, prior to the selection process, everyone was informed of the cost and the project’s scope of work by the agency that implemented it.

“This (contractor refusing to proceed with the project) clearly shows that they are not responsible and just want to play around,” said Chieng to the media after presenting educational incentives to 13 students of SMK Bukit Assek who had obtained excellent results in SPM yesterday (June 22).

Chieng also said that he had written a complaint to the Sibu Resident’s Office regarding the contractor’s attitude and recommended that they be blacklisted.

“I want this contractor to be blacklisted for all government projects in Bukit Assek constituency,” Chieng added, wanting it to serve as a lesson for all contractors who carry out government projects within his constituency.

The implementing agency will be conducting another voting session with the hope that the project can be carried out in the near future. — DayakDaily
