SIBU, Feb 7: A businessman in his sixties was cheated of RM132,330 within two months after investing in a bogus Bitcoin investment scheme.
Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mancha Ata said the victim had made a total of 22 online transactions to four different accounts from last September to November.
“Last September, the victim received a message through Facebook Messenger from an account called ‘Jingyun Shu’, who introduced the investment.
“The victim, who was interested, then learned about the bitcoin investment method through another online individual named ‘SmallStrawberry’.
“The victim was promised a profitable return between three to four hours after depositing his initial investment through the DDEX app,” he said in a statement today.
Mancha also revealed that the victim had been investing in US dollars and earned only RM400, which was credited to the DDEX app account and cannot be withdrawn without a deposit or a guarantor.
The case is investigated under section 420 of the Penal Code. If convicted, the offender will be imprisoned for a period of not less than one year and not more than 10 years, with mandatory whipping, and may also be imposed by a fine. — DayakDaily
