KUCHING, May 30: Senior lawyer Shankar Ram Asnani was unanimously re-elected president of the Sri Maha Mariamman temple committee yesterday during its biennial general meeting and election of the management committee for the term 2022-2024, which was held at the Indian Association Kuching (IAK) hall located at Jalan Rock here.
According to a press statement, Shankar was once again re-elected for another term up to March 2024, with some of the reasons given by members, including the commitment to build the temple for the people and good leadership.
“After the election process yesterday, aside from the temple members, Shankar also expressed his gratitude to Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg for always being a supporter in matters arising in regards to the temple.
“Special thanks were also extended to Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department Datuk Gerawat Gala for his assistance with immigration issues related to the entry of foreign workers to complete the temple.
“The Sri Maha Mariamman Temple had to halt most of their works during the pandemic due to the travel entry ban,” the statement reads.
The statement went on to say that this has caused a delay in the temple’s construction, but with the recent border opening in May, the sculptor should be arriving in Sarawak soon.
“The sculptures are a big part of the temple’s aesthetics to complete it,” it said.
