KUCHING, Aug 11: Eleven areas in Sarawak have recorded unhealthy Air Pollution Index (API) readings as of 10am today, with Serian getting closer to the ‘very unhealthy’ level with a reading of 189.
Based on data from the Air Pollutant Index Management System (APIMS), Samarahan recorded the second highest reading with 170, followed by Kuching (165), Bintulu (159), Samalaju (155), Mukah, Sibu, Sarikei, Sri Aman (153 each), Miri (151), and ILP Miri (119).
Only two areas in the State recorded moderate readings—Kapit (77) and Limbang (74).
An API reading between 201 and 300 is categorised as ‘very unhealthy’, while a reading between 101 and 200 is categorised as unhealthy.
This is an increase in the number of areas that recorded unhealthy API readings compared to Monday’s (Aug 10) reading at 10am.
Members of the public are advised to monitor the latest API readings, reduce prolonged outdoor activities and wear a suitable face mask when outdoors, particularly when air quality deteriorates.
Those with respiratory or heart conditions, children and older persons should take extra precautions and limit exposure to haze.
Meanwhile, the Malaysian Meteorological Department (METMalaysia) recorded daily maximum temperatures of 35.1°C in Kuching and Mulu on Aug 10, the highest in the State.
This was followed by Sibu and Limbang (34.9°C), Kapit (34.5°C), Bintulu (34.1°C), and Miri (32.9°C).
On Aug 9, Sarawak Deputy Minister for Urban Planning, Land Administration, and Environment Datuk Len Talif Salleh said that the State government is considering carrying out cloud seeding operations if haze and weather conditions in the State continue to worsen. — DayakDaily
