SERIAN, Jan 12: Parents must be wary of the courses provided by private institutions of higher learning (IPTS) before sending their children to study there.

In giving the advice, Prime Minister’s Special Envoy to Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan, Dato Sri Richard Riot Jaem, said the government does not recognise some of the courses offered by these IPTS.

“Some students may receive offers from IPTS as soon as they complete their SPM or STPM examinations.

“But past experiences revealed that some courses offered are not recognised by the government, which would put the students and parents at the losing end.

“So here, I must advise parents to be very careful before sending their children to pursue their education at such places,” Riot said at the opening of an incentive presentation ceremony at a Kampung Pichin today.

Riot, who is Serian MP, also urged parents to send their children to industrial training institutes (ILP) for skilled training.

He said the ILP in Serian, the third in the State and costs about RM300 million, will be completed and operational by the end of next year. The other two ILP are at Kota Samarahan and Miri.

“For SPM school leavers who did not perform well academically, it is not the end, so I suggest that parents send them to ILP for skilled training,” he pointed out.

Present at the event was Serian district education officer Charlie Ungang. ā€” DayakDaily
