KUCHING, March 5: The construction of a new yard to accommodate 2,500 vehicles at Senari Port here is expected to be completed by the fourth quarter of this year.
Deputy Premier of Sarawak Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said the new Roll-On/Roll-Off (RoRo) Yard project is progressing according to schedule.
“As at Feb 25, 2024, the actual physical progress of this project is at 49.19 per cent against the scheduled progress of 47.91 per cent.
“It is critical that this RoRo yard is completed before our Sejingkat Bridge (is completed) because if the bridge is completed, the RoRo ships must go to other sites,” he said during the handover ceremony of two units of quay cranes held at Senari Port here today.
Uggah who is Minister of Infrastructure and Ports Development (MIPD) further directed the Kuching Port Authority (KPA) to look into establishing another RoRo yard to increase the vehicle storage capacity to 5,000 vehicles.
The RoRo yard is currently being developed on a 5-acre site at Senari Port.
Upon completion, it will replace Kuching Port in Pending which currently handles about 3,000 vehicles per month.
Amongst those present were KPA chairman Dato Awang Bemee Pengiran Ali Basah, MIPD acting deputy permanent secretary Mustapha Adenan, KPA general manager Robert Lau Hong Thiam, Sarawak Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) director Jamadi Yusup, Harbour Link Group Berhad Group managing director Dato Francis Yong Piaw Soon, and Qingdao Haixi Heavy-Duty Machinery Co Ltd marketing director Winny Li Qiuhong. — DayakDaily
