KUCHING, Sept 24: The search for an Indian national who was reported missing yesterday at Sungai Sarawak, Jalan Dermaga, Bintawa after he disappeared into the river continued today.

The state Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) operations centre in a statement revealed efforts to find Santosh Kumar, 23, from India resumed at 9am this morning.

Search and rescue (SAR) operation personnel combed the river using water surface methods and grappling irons over a search area of about 1.5km.

“The seaman with six crew members started their journey from Sheng jetty heading towards Kuching Barrage. Fifteen minutes later, [someone] realised the man was missing and they saw him struggling in the water. Crew members also threw a buoy in the man’s direction but failed (to pull him out) as he kept sinking into the water,” the statement read.

A police report was later lodged over the incident and a SAR operation was immediately mounted.
