KUCHING, Aug 21: The State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) is identifying and preparing several venues as Covid-19 Quarantine and Low Risk Treatment Quarantine Centres (PKRC), said Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah.

Uggah, who is also SDMC chairman, said this would be done in light of the increasing number of Covid-19 positive cases in Kuching district.

ā€œWe must be prepared, whatever the situation may be. The surge in cases will require such centres,ā€ he said after visiting SMK Tabuan Jaya and SMK Tun Abang Haji Openg, which are being considered for the possibility of being converted into PKRCs, today.

Uggah pointed out that all positive cases in Category 1 , 2 and 3, which are non-severe cases will be placed in such centres where they would be cared for and monitored by the doctors and nurses.

ā€œThe more severe categories such as Category 4 and 5 cases will be admitted to hospitals,ā€ he added.

Meanwhile, during his visit to the schools, Uggah said he was informed by Dr Khairul Rezzuan from the Kuching Health Department that Kuching district currently has a total of 10 PKRCs with 2,062 beds.

ā€œWe are looking at opening a few more which will give us another 1,356 extra beds. We hope to gradually increase the centres to give us a targeted 3,828 beds.

ā€œIn addition, for areas outside Kuching District like Lundu, Bau,Samarahan, Simunjan and Serian, we are targeting a total of 2,023 beds. These would give us a total of 5,851 beds in the Southern Zone,ā€ he said.

Uggah also conveyed his gratitude to the State Education Department for allowing SDMC to use several schools in the district as PKRCs. ā€” DayakDaily
