MIRI, March 3: The State’s land border will be further strengthened to prevent the spread of African Swine Fever (ASF) disease as well as to detect and illegal livestock movements.

Minister for Modernisation of Agriculture and Regional Development Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom said these precautionary actions will be taken to ensure the safety of the State’s livestock industry.

“To prevent and detect such movement, we have to screen all livestock that are coming in. However, some of the pork meat are being brought in via illegal channels into the State,” he said.

Rundi also gave his assurance that the government will be closely monitoring the situation.

Moreover, he said media representatives played an important part in helping the government in managing the outbreak by dissiminating facts about the disease to the public and to ensure that they stay vigilant.

“At the same time, officers at the Department of Veterinary Services Sarawak (DVSS) must also continue dissiminating information about ASF to the public so that they know about the disease,” he said.

Rundi disclosed this after witnessing the licence agreement signing ceremony between DVSS and Alam Bumijaya Sdn Bhd on the privatisation of Karabungan Agriculture Station for commercial cattle production in Miri. — DayakDaily
