SIBU, Oct 8: Sarawak eyes a new engineering milestone with a 704-metre elevated arch rising across swampy terrain in Sibu, targeting the title of Southeast Asia’s longest elevated arch upon completion.

Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR) Director Datu Dr Cassidy Morris said the innovative structure was designed specifically to overcome soft ground conditions and the risk of settlement in the swampy area.

“Building a road over swampy ground is not merely a challenge; it demands bold and innovative engineering solutions.

“At Jalan Teku/Pasai Siong, Sibu, this challenge is being addressed through the construction of a 704-metre ‘Elevated Arch Structure’ spanning a swampy area.

“This is an engineering approach specifically designed to address soft ground conditions and the risk of settlement,” he said in a social media post shared yesterday (Oct 7).

Cassidy described the project as an example of engineering that goes beyond adapting to site conditions by innovating to overcome them.

The elevated section is part of the Proposed Upgrading Jalan Teku/ Pasai Siong / Jalan Kemuyang, Sibu Division (Package 1): New Road from Teku Pasai Siong to Kemuyang, Sibu.

The package involves constructing a new 6.172-kilometre road to JKR R3 standards, including the elevated section from Chainage (CH) 2+570 to CH3+270.

Cassidy recently inspected the project site to assess construction progress and ensure that works meet the required quality standards and completion timeline.

The project is currently progressing according to schedule and is expected to be completed in September 2027.

Once completed, the road will provide better access between Teku Pasai Siong and Kemuyang, making travel easier for residents and supporting local growth.

The project also showcases JKR Sarawak’s efforts to apply innovative engineering solutions to challenging terrain while delivering infrastructure designed for long-term public use. — DayakDaily
