KUCHING, May 8: Sarawak and global energy company TotalEnergies are exploring strategic collaborations in renewable energy, hydrogen production, and carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS), following a high-level meeting held on Wednesday (May 7) at the company’s global headquarters in Paris.
Leading the Sarawak delegation was Deputy Premier and Minister for International Trade, Industry and Investment, Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, who met with senior executives from TotalEnergies to discuss the State’s green energy ambitions and investment potential.
According to a media release today, the meeting reflects Sarawak’s proactive approach in partnering with global industry leaders to advance its clean energy agenda.
Awang Tengah highlighted the state’s strong renewable energy potential, particularly in hydropower, with an estimated capacity of up to 20 gigawatts (GW).
He also shared progress on Sarawak’s renewable initiatives, including the successful 50-megawatt (MW) floating solar pilot project at Batang Ai.
Sarawak is also scaling up efforts in biomass, bioenergy and sustainable hydrogen production, positioning itself as a key regional hub for green energy development.
Thibaut Toulemonde, Head of Business Development Coordination for Onshore Renewables at TotalEnergies, shared the company’s vision to become one of the world’s top five renewable energy producers by 2030.
TotalEnergies currently has a global portfolio of 97GW in solar, wind, and energy storage—62GW of which is under development—and is actively involved in advanced hydrogen and CCUS projects worldwide.
Both parties identified strong potential for collaboration across hydropower, solar, hydrogen, and CCUS.
The Deputy Premier specifically highlighted the Bintulu region as being ready for CCUS development, backed by Sarawak’s clear regulatory frameworks and commitment to facilitating international investment.
To drive momentum from the discussions, Sarawak’s investment promotion agency, InvestSarawak, has been tasked with coordinating follow-up actions, including facilitating a visit by TotalEnergies to Sarawak in the coming months.
Recognising the company’s previous engagements in Sarawak, Awang Tengah extended an open invitation to TotalEnergies to strengthen collaboration, affirming the State government’s commitment to maintaining a stable, business-friendly environment for sustainable investment. — DayakDaily
