KUCHING, June 16: The Sarawak government will establish the Lake Development Authority (LDA) by 2030 to enhance the management of the region’s natural resources.
In a TVS report, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said that the LDA will manage and monitor the development of all lakes in Sarawak, including dams and natural lakes, with a focus on environmental sustainability and sustainable development.
“LDA will serve as a regulatory body to ensure that lake area development, including hydroelectric projects, does not harm the ecosystem.
“It will also support socio-economic activities such as tourism and agriculture based on natural resources,” he said during a visit to the Baleh Hydroelectric Dam project in Kapit today.
He added that LDA will act as a facilitator between the government and the business community, working closely with agencies such as the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) and the Department of Agriculture to ensure holistic management.
The establishment of LDA is also in line with Sarawak’s commitment to joining the Asian Green Room in promoting environmentally friendly development at the regional level. — DayakDaily
