MIRI, Feb 5: A comprehensive study and stricter preventive measures will be implemented immediately to ensure the safety of residents in high-risk areas following the recent landslide tragedy at Kampung Lereng Bukit that claimed five lives.
In a news report by Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas), Sarawak Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki affirmed that the Sarawak government will take decisive action after his site visit today to assess the situation.
“We cannot allow such tragedies to continue,” he emphasised.
During the visit, Abu Bakar was briefed by Miri Division Resident Galong Luan at the Sarawak Water Board Meeting Room. The briefing included a detailed report on the safety of hilly areas in Miri and proposed long-term solutions.
Abu Bakar also visited the temporary evacuation centre (PPS) at SMK Bekenu to ensure the welfare of flood victims and distribute aid to those affected.

To date, 385 victims from 47 families have been accommodated at the centre after the flood impacted the area.
To ease their hardship, 67 food baskets containing dry food, rice, and drinking water were donated by Sarawak Energy and Laku Management Sdn Bhd (LAKU).
Recognising the efforts of all parties involved in managing the disaster, Abu Bakar expressed his deep appreciation to the front-line workers who tirelessly ensured the victims’ needs were met.
“I am extremely grateful to everyone involved, including the PPS staff and related agencies, who have shown tremendous commitment in assisting the flood victims. This compassion and spirit of solidarity are truly valued,” he stated.
Abu Bakar also inspected the PPS at SMK Suai and the site for the new Subis District Office construction project in Kampung Rambai Bekenu, which was also affected by the flood.
Present at the visit were Deputy Secretary (Administration) Datu Buckland Bangik and Subis District Officer Norlila Ulis. — DayakDaily
