KUCHING, July 29: Four draft reviews of customary laws have been submitted to the Sarawak Attorney General’s Chambers for consideration and further review.
The matter was conveyed to Sarawak Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki during a courtesy visit by Sarawak Council for Native Customs (MAIS) chairman Datu Dr Neilson Ilan Mersat at Wisma Bapa Malaysia on Tuesday (July 28).
According to Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas), Abu Bakar was briefed that the four draft customary laws comprise the Iban Adat, Bidayuh Adat, Kayan Adet and Kenyah Adet.
In a statement, MAIS said the initiative forms part of its efforts to modernise the customary law framework through the reinterpretation and enhancement of existing provisions, as well as the introduction of new provisions to ensure that traditional practices remain relevant amid changing lifestyles and evolving societal needs.
The review exercise also reflects the Sarawak government’s ongoing commitment to safeguarding the diverse customary heritage of the State’s ethnic communities while ensuring that its application remains practical, responsive and aligned with contemporary requirements.
During the meeting, Abu Bakar congratulated Neilson on his appointment as chairman of the Sarawak Council for Native Customs for the 2026–2029 term.
