KUCHING, June 15: The Sarawak government is planning to develop new housing and road infrastructure to expand Kampung Sejijak and Kampung Paroh in response to growing population needs and to better connect the area with surrounding townships.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the development plan includes opening up 30 acres of land for a new housing scheme that will benefit local residents, particularly young families and future generations.
This new housing scheme, he said, will follow the Kampung Segedup model, where the government bears the cost of infrastructure such as drainage, water, and electricity. Each residential lot is expected to measure about 12 points, with a land premium of RM2,500.
“We will request the Land and Survey Department to plan for about 100 residential lots between Kampung Sejijak and Kampung Paroh, and we’ll see how the public responds to the initiative.
“The houses will be priced at RM150,000, with a RM10,000 deposit fully covered by the government. You’ll only need to pay around RM200 per month through Mutiara Mortgage & Finance—and just like that, you’ll own a valuable asset worth at least RM350,000, combining both house and land,” he said when speaking at the closing ceremony of the 2025 Sejijak Regatta held at Kampung Sejijak today.
In addition to housing, Abang Johari—who also serves as Minister for Natural Resources and Urban Development—proposed constructing a new road to link Kampung Sejijak to the existing route via the Tan Sri Sulaiman Daud Bridge and Emart Matang, which would significantly improve accessibility and reduce travel time, especially for those currently reliant on the Matang road.
“We’ve already built the road to Segedup via the Tan Sri Sulaiman Daud Bridge. Perhaps we can also plan to extend that road to Sejijak. That way, you won’t have to travel so far around. This is something I’ve been thinking about.
“When I first became an elected representative, one of the first things I did was build roads connecting Malihah to Sejijak and Paroh. Now, as your Premier, I will try to build one more road for Kampung Sejijak,” he added.
Abang Johari also hinted at a larger infrastructure project involving Segedup and Sejijak, which is still in the early planning stage due to the scale of the investment required.
“But I’ll talk about that another time—not today. The Kuching Resident (Dayang Joanita Azizah Abang Morshidi) knows, and the Land and Survey director (Awang Zamhari Awang Mahmood) might know too, because it involves a large allocation. But the project will help bring our villages closer together.
“So there’s no need to go into detail now. I’ll explain it later—just make sure to invite me again,” he quipped.
