KUCHING, June 15: The Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Sarawak (ACCCIS) has proposed that the Sarawak government consider the establishment a free port or free trade zone as it could significantly strengthen the State’s economy and regional influence.
According to a news report from New Sarawak Tribune, ACCCIS’ president Kong Chiong Ung highlighted that the proposal is particularly timely, especially with Indonesia’s capital being relocated to Kalimantan, making Borneo an increasingly strategic location in the region.
“This is a timely moment to pursue such an initiative. A free trade zone would enhance regional integration, attract high-quality foreign investment, and open new markets for local businesses.
“Thus, it would help them connect to global supply chains and strengthen Sarawak’s economic and geopolitical standing,” he said during ACCCIS 60th anniversary gala dinner last night.
Kong also urged the State government to strengthen local procurement policies to ensure that small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Sarawak can actively participate in relevant supply chains, including those in the green economy and sustainable energy sectors.
“This is important so they too can benefit from the growth and prosperity of our State,” he said.
Touching on the challenges posed by rapid technological advancement, Kong noted that the chamber is also paying close attention to the risks posed by artificial intelligence (AI).
“In today’s rapidly evolving global landscape, AI has become a formidable and often unseen competitor, transforming business models across industries.
“ACCCIS recognises that without proactive efforts to support skill development and mindset transformation, the consequences will reach far beyond individual enterprises – they could weaken the overall resilience and future of our economic ecosystem,” he said.
To address this, Kong said ACCCIS remains committed to promoting training, upskilling, and capacity-building programmes, while also supporting forward-looking government policies that help businesses adapt to emerging trends so they can stay ahead in an increasingly fast-paced world.
“At the same time, we are actively nurturing young talent, channeling the wisdom and energy of the next generation to become a vital driving force in Sarawak’s continued development,” said Kong.
The gala dinner was officiated by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. Also present was Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian. – DayakDaily
