KUCHING, Feb 5: The total damage assessment of electrical facilities caused by the recent floods will only be fully evaluated once the situation has stabilised.
In a TVS report, Minister of Utility and Telecommunication Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi stated that his ministry is currently unable to determine the overall extent of the damage, which can only be assessed after all residents at temporary evacuation centres (PPS) have returned home.
“We have yet to estimate the damages, as some areas are still affected by floods. Once the situation is fully resolved and all affected residents have returned, we will conduct a proper assessment.
“For now, our priority is ensuring the comfort of those relocated to PPS and the safety of all residents,” he said during a visit to the Water Supply Project: Pipeline Replacement at Kampung Rampangi today.
Julaihi noted that the assessment process would take time due to the widespread impact of the floods.
Additionally, he emphasised the need for a thorough evaluation, particularly in severely affected areas such as Bintulu.
“For instance, Bintulu typically records 100 millimetres of annual rainfall, but in just one day, it received 900 millimetres, leading to severe flooding.
“Some of our water treatment plants were affected, with intake points unable to operate. Meanwhile, several substations had to be shut down,” he explained.
Julaihi assured that utility agencies under his ministry, including Sarawak Energy through its subsidiary Sesco, are continuously monitoring the situation and prioritising public safety. — DayakDaily
