KUCHING, May 8: The Sarawak Skills Group of Learning Institutions (Sarawak Skills) plans to establish a Certified Training Centre for Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs), Electric Vehicles (EVs), and Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicles in Sarawak.

According to a press release, on May 6, Sarawak Skills launched a Hybrid and Electric Vehicle Training Course for Sarawak Skills’ teaching staff and trainers in collaboration with its strategic partner, the Hybrid and Electric Vehicle Technology Centre of Kolej Komuniti Kepala Batas.

From May 6 to May 9, 15 instructors, lecturers, and trainers from across the Sarawak Skills Group of Learning Institutions are attending the course at Sarawak Skills, Tabuan Jaya, Kuching.

In his speech to launch the Hybrid and Electric Vehicle Training Course, Sarawak Skills executive director and Federation of Malaysian Skills Development Centres (FMSDC) chairman Hallman Sabri highlighted: “I wish to thank our strategic partner, namely the Hybrid and Electric Vehicle Technology Centre of Kolej Komuniti Kepala Batas for this wonderful opportunity to synergize our expertise and resources, especially in the area of providing specialised training on electric and hybrid vehicles.

“Indeed, as the only centre in the Asia-Pacific Region to offer Level(s) 1 to 4 of the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI), United Kingdom’s award/certification programmes for electric and hybrid vehicles, we are grateful for the technical expertise and support by Kolej Komuniti Kepala Batas in our quest to establish a Certified Training Centre for Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) and Electric Vehicles (EVs) in Sarawak.”

He disclosed that upon completion of the four-day course and passing the oral, written, and practical assessments, participants will earn three internationally recognised certifications, namely the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI), United Kingdom International Level 1 Award in Electric/Hybrid Vehicle Awareness, IMI International Level 2 Award in Electric/Hybrid Vehicle Hazard Management for Emergency and Recovery Personnel, and IMI International Level 3 Award in Electric/Hybrid Vehicle System Repair and Replacement.

“With this pool of Certified Trainers for Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) and Electrical Vehicles (EVs), Sarawak Skills will be able to take that all-important first step to establish a certified training centre to offer HEV and EV programmes.

“In this respect, I am pleased to share that with the support of the Sarawak government, the Sarawak Skills Group of Learning Institutions will be setting up a dedicated Advanced Automotive Training College (AATC) in Kuching that will also accommodate the maintenance of Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicles,” Hallman added.

Among those present at the launch were Kolej Komuniti Kepala Batas’ Automotive Programme head Mohd Fikri Azri Mat Saad, Hybrid and Electric Vehicle Technology Centre centre coordinator Suhaimi Yusof, trainers from Kolej Komuniti Kepala Batas, and members of the Sarawak Skills management team.
