Sarawak powerlifter Bonnie secures gold, sets new Para Asian Games record

KUCHING, Oct 25: Sarawak para powerlifter Bonnie Bunyau Gustin has once again clinched a gold medal for Malaysia at the Para Asian Games held in Hangzhou.

According to a national daily report, the world champion made history by shattering the Games record, lifting an astounding 230kg to secure victory in the men’s below 72kg category today.

China’s Hu Peng secured the silver medal with a 208kg lift, while Bekzod Jamilov of Uzbekistan claimed the bronze with a 204kg lift.

Bonnie currently holds the world record for this event, an astonishing 231kg, achieved at the world meet in Dubai in August of this year.

His exceptional performance has contributed significantly to Malaysia’s success, marking the fifth gold medal for the country in the ongoing Asian Para Games.

Minister of Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah, who is with the team in Hangzhou, congratulated Bonnie and the para weightlifting team for the feat.

“Congratulations to Bonnie and coach Jamil. The powerlifting team from Malaysia, five of the athletes are from Sarawak while one from Peninsular Malaysia,” she said in a statement today. — DayakDaily
