MIRI,Sept 24: Sarawak’s sailing team for the upcoming Malaysia Games (Sukma) 2024 needs more athletes, says Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports and Entreprenuer Development Dr Ripin Lamat.
He urged youths from the Northern Region, especially youths from Telang Usan constituency with great potential in the sport to come forward and engage with his ministry for training.
Dr Ripin disclosed this today before officiating at the flag-off ceremony for the Telang Usan charity run at Piasau Boat Club (PBC).
He disclosed that other sports which needed to recruit more athletes are sepak takraw and women’s rugby.
“I was told by Telang Usan assemblyman, Dennis Ngau just now, that Penan from his constituency are very much talented and have a great potential in the sepak takraw sport. I do hope that they can contact my ministry so that we could arrange for some training sessions,” he said.
Sarawak will host Sukma 2024. Five out of 32 sports being competed would be held in Miri, including sailing.
On another note, today’s charity run has successfully raised a total RM27,150. The proceeds will be used to help rebuild the 27-door Kampung Long Wat, Apoh Baram that was destroyed in a fire on July 9 this year.
A total of 280 runners comprising members of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Telang Usan and Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) took part in the charity run.
Among those present was Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau. — DayakDaily
