KANOWIT, Sept 24: The recent riot which took place here is a criminal case in nature and does not involve any racial sentiments.

“The riot does not concern racial issues but is a criminal case,” said National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang after officiating at the closing of Kanowit Festival today.

Aaron, who is also Kanowit MP said the town is still as peaceful as before.

“Kanowit is still safe. You see today (a lot of people come for Pesta Kanowit) if it is not safe nobody wants to come. Today everywhere is crowded. This makes us consider making the waterfront better next time,” he said.

On Sept 12, a group of protesters caused a ruckus outside the Kanowit District Office where certain individuals were charged over an incident.

Some of the protesters broke into the surrounding area of the District Office and started attacking individuals in the premises.

State Commissioner of Police, Datuk Mohd Azam Ahmad Sapri said the incident had caused two men to suffer injuries and damage to their vehicles.

He added that the case is being investigated under Section 148 of the Penal Code. — DayakDaily
