KUCHING, April 30: The Sarawak Museum Department (SMD) will work with the Faculty of Language and Communication (FLC) from Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) towards the improvement of Sarawak’s awareness and responsibility for its vast cultural heritage.

In a statement today, SMD said that its director Tazudin Mohtar called for more future programmes to be designed and developed alongside FLC during a strategic meeting held on April 28.

“As with what we are doing now, the roles of museums have shifted in the digital era, and there are a lot of opportunities that need to be further explored.

“Our mission is to enrich and articulate the communities’ worldviews on identity, and communication-related initiatives are the way to achieve that,” he said.

Among the events in the pipeline is FLC’s flagship conference, the International Conference of Media and Society 2022 (iC-MAS2022), to be held later this year with the theme “Communicating Cultural Heritage: Inclusivity in Changing Landscapes”.

Meanwhile, according to Unimas Deputy Dean of Industry and Community Engagement Dr Dayang Aizza Maisha Abang Ahmad, iC-MAS2022 will be an instrumental and meaningful discourse platform for academics, local agencies, and policymakers regarding community inclusivity through communicating cultural heritage.

“We believe that through the synergistic relationship we’re going to have with SMD, there would be an even higher appreciation of the cultural heritage of Sarawak,” she said. — DayakDaily
