Unimas Vice-Chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Ahmad Hata Rasit said the achievement demonstrated the capabilities of local talent in semiconductor technology, an industry that plays a critical role in the global economy.

“Our students have also made history in semiconductor technology when Martin Kennedy Wan Alexander Taylor, Mohamad Iszuanessrol Nasir and Emmanuel Jawin Jerry Tanny from the Faculty of Engineering were crowned champions of the SMD IC Design Competition after producing Sarawak’s first chip,” he said speaking at the 30th UNIMAS Convocation Ceremony here today.

According to a report by TVS, Ahmad Hata added that the team received a prize worth RM20,000, presented by the Sarawak Premier, in recognition of their achievement.

He said the success highlighted the potential of local talent in integrated circuit (IC) design, a key component in the development of the global semiconductor industry.

He described the feat as a reflection of Unimas’ ability to produce highly skilled graduates who can drive innovation and meet the demands of high-technology industries.

He also stressed the need to strengthen technological expertise and foster a culture of innovation among students to prepare them for the evolving demands of future industries.

The success aligns with Sarawak’s ambition to expand its technology sector and develop local semiconductor expertise. — DayakDaily
