KUCHING, Nov 5: Sarawak Delta’s recognition as a UNESCO Global Geopark must translate into tangible benefits for local communities through research, education and biodiversity conservation, says Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.

According to a TVS report, he said Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) had an important role to play in maximising the opportunities created by the recognition through its academic expertise, research and innovation.

Uggah said the recognition not only highlighted Sarawak’s rich geological heritage and biodiversity but also opened up greater opportunities for higher education institutions to expand research into the state’s natural resources.

“More importantly, research outcomes must bring tangible benefits to communities while ensuring Sarawak’s natural and cultural heritage is preserved for future generations,” he said at the 30th UNIMAS Convocation Ceremony in Kota Samarahan today.

He said one of the initiatives through which UNIMAS could contribute was the development of the Biodiversity Nexus Blueprint in 2026.

The initiative would serve as a platform to connect academic expertise with technology, industry and local communities to strengthen biodiversity conservation efforts and ensure research findings benefit society.

Uggah expressed hope that UNIMAS would continue to serve as a strategic partner to the Sarawak government in strengthening research and education, while supporting the state’s sustainable development agenda. —DayakDaily
