MIRI, Feb 2: The Sarawak government has increased the disaster relief food aid rate to RM50 per person per day, ensuring better support for flood victims, says Sarawak Minister for Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development, Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah.
Speaking today during a visit to a temporary relief centre (PPS) in Kampung Pujut Tanjung Batu, Fatimah highlighted the importance of this increase in providing adequate and nutritious meals to evacuees.
“This aid is meant for those affected by disasters such as floods. The RM50 per person per day allocation ensures meals are provided, whether three or five times a day, depending on the centre’s arrangements,” she said.
The PPS in Kampung Pujut Tanjung Batu is currently sheltering 109 flood victims, including four Penan families from Kampung 1Malaysia. The displaced individuals primarily come from Kampung Pujut Tanjung Batu and Kampung 1Malaysia.
Fatimah noted that the revised relief rate has improved both the quality and availability of meals for flood victims.
“Previously, meals were cooked at the relief centres, but now all food is fully provided, and the government has ensured an increased assistance rate,” she explained.
She also addressed food safety concerns, advising evacuees against storing food for extended periods.
“Some victims have been keeping food for later consumption, but health officers have reminded them not to store food for more than four hours to prevent spoilage,” she said.
Beyond food aid, Fatimah emphasised the importance of mental well-being, particularly for children and families experiencing displacement.
“When children are stressed, parents are affected too. We want to ensure their emotional well-being,” she said, adding that every relief centre is equipped with medical teams, including doctors and nurses, to provide healthcare support.
The minister expressed appreciation for the government’s commitment to improving disaster relief efforts, ensuring that those affected receive timely and sufficient assistance. – DayakDaily
