KUCHING, Feb 2: Priority will be given to those most in need of assistance, particularly individuals and families who have suffered significant losses due to the floods, says Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
“Priority will be given to families who are truly affected, whose belongings have been destroyed or are no longer usable.
“The assessment is conducted by the Resident in the area and will be decided by Deputy Premier and State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah,” Abang Johari told reporters during one of his Chinese New Year open house visiting rounds today.
As for financial assistance to flood victims who were not registered at the temporary evacuation centres (PPS), according to a news report by TVS, Abang Johari said this will be given at the discretion and assessment of the SDMC.
He said in response to reports that only flood victims who register at the PPS will receive assistance, while affected victims living with relatives are not eligible for aid.
Meanwhile, the Premier emphasized that if the additional RM10 million allocation to assist flood victims is insufficient, the Sarawak government will consider additional allocations at the Cabinet level if necessary. – DayakDaily
