KUCHING, Oct 30: The Sarawak Gas Roadmap (SGR) is expected to attract over RM100 million in potential investments, both foreign and domestic, in the next 10 years.
Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros) chairman Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr Hamid Bugo emphasised that the roadmap aims to increase gas utilisation in Sarawak by expanding the current gas distribution network and establishing new physical and virtual pipeline systems.
“This initiative will support the domestic economy, creating ripple effects across industries, driving development, and enhancing livelihoods across Sarawak.
“Beyond profits or building infrastructure, the establishment of strategic hubs in Miri, Samalaju, Bintulu, and Kuching will enable and foster both economic growth and social progress,” he said in his speech text at the Petros Connect 2024 event at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) yesterday (Oct 29).
The event was officiated by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan.
Hamid highlighted that over the past seven years since its inception, Petros has demonstrated it is more than an oil and gas company—it is a growth engine for Sarawak’s development, with a clear mission to ensure that Sarawakians benefit from the region’s resources.
Notable achievements include the 65-kilometre Samalaju Pipeline project, which will link Bintulu to the Samalaju Industrial Park by the end of 2025, and a 500-megawatt combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) plant in Miri, expected to be operational by the end of 2027 to provide secure, reliable energy for northern Sarawak.
“These projects will deliver essential resources for the area’s development and economic expansion,” he added.
Moreover, Petros is partnering with academic institutions, including the University of Technology Sarawak (UTS), Curtin University Malaysia, Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak, and Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas), to develop the next generation of talent shaping Sarawak’s future.
“We’re addressing the evolving energy landscape by advancing energy transition and education in Sarawak, focusing on technological innovation and creating opportunities for students through internships, scholarships, and graduate programmes.
“Our commitment is to harness resources to ensure the benefits reach the people of Sarawak directly,” he affirmed. — DayakDaily
