KUCHING, Oct 24: Sarawak Microelectronics Design (SMD), a local semiconductor chip design company, has successfully produced nearly 100 engineers with expertise in chip design to date, reveals Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

According to a TVS news report, Abang Johari highlighted that Sarawak’s economy requires chip production capabilities to drive economic growth, with a focus on targeting Asian markets as the primary consumers.

“We are currently in need of chip design engineers. Through SMD, we have produced nearly 100 chip design engineers, and this technology is vital in industries such as aerospace, shipping, and petrochemicals.

“Chip sizes are becoming smaller, and their designs are becoming more streamlined. Therefore, we need specialised expertise in this field,” he said during his speech at the Centre for Technology Excellence Sarawak (Centexs) 10th anniversary dinner at a hotel last night (Oct 23).

The Premier expressed optimism that Centexs would become a key platform for producing more skilled youth in various fields.

“Centexs is no longer just a youth centre; it has become a place to train graduates. Those with degrees in aerospace, finance, and renewable energy also need training to apply the latest technology.

“It is crucial for us to integrate technology usage, and I believe Centexs can provide the necessary training,” he added.

Previously, Abang Johari said that Sarawak needs about 500 engineers specialising in chip design.

He reiterated that Sarawak is committed to producing more engineers to meet this growing demand. — DayakDaily
