KUCHING, April 16: A group of residents in Lorong Hup Kee 2 have raised concerns over a planned rubbish disposal centre which is expected to be constructed near their neighbourhood.

Despite first lodging complaints with the local council and developer in July 2024, the residents say their concerns have yet to be addressed, prompting them to now seek assistance from the Sarawak Democratic Action Party (DAP).

In a statement, its chairman Chong Chieng Jen said the residents fear the placement of the waste facility, approved as part of a high-rise residential project nearby, could lead to long-term hygiene issues once the building is occupied.

“There are alternative sites within the developer’s compound to locate the rubbish disposal centre which will not cause nuisance to the neighbouring residents,” Chong suggested.

He said that Sarawak DAP would write to relevant authorities to call for an amendment to the current plan for the rubbish disposal centre.

He stressed that the basic rights and interest of the residents should not be compromised for the benefits of large developers. – DayakDaily
