KUCHING, April 16: A courier driver was fined RM3,000, in default seven months’ jail, by the Magistrates’ Court here today after pleading guilty to possessing stolen computer equipment belonging to the courier service’s customer.
The accused, Alexander Jordan Annie Teresa, 24, from Batu Kawa, entered a guilty plea before Magistrate Mason Jaro Lenya Barayan.
According to the charge, Alexander was found in possession of a box containing an Asus monitor and two Lenovo central processing units (CPUs) belonging to a company that distributes various electronic goods.
The offence was committed at his residence in Taman Desa Bumiko, Batu Kawa, at around 5.10pm on February 10.
He was charged under Section 411 of the Penal Code for dishonestly receiving stolen property, which carries a maximum penalty of five years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both.
The case is part of a larger investigation involving 71 missing parcels valued at RM206,159.85.
Case facts revealed that the courier company’s security manager lodged a police report on February 3, 2024, after senior management alerted them to the disappearance of 71 parcels meant for delivery to branches in Miri, Sibu, Bintulu, Sungai Merah, and Kuching.
CCTV footage showed that all the parcels had been handed over to the company’s driver, but were never delivered to the courier’s Kuching headquarters as scheduled. A total of 22 trips were involved.
The company explained that parcels from Miri, Bintulu, and Sibu are typically routed through the Kuching headquarters before being dispatched by local delivery drivers — in this case, the accused.
Investigations revealed that the accused had driven a lorry and a delivery van loaded with parcels to an area not covered by CCTV. While the lorry returned after about 15 minutes, the van was not seen again.
This suspicious behaviour led the complainant to suspect the accused was linked to the disappearance of the parcels.
A police report was lodged, which led to Alexander’s arrest on February 6. A search later confirmed he was in possession of some of the stolen items.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Chuah Kai Sheng led the prosecution, while the accused was unrepresented. – DayakDaily
