KUCHING, Apr 18: Local scientists’ discovery of a component derived from palm oil as a potential source of aircraft fuel has opened new opportunities for Sarawak in the sustainable aviation industry.

According to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, it is currently being studied by Sarawak Biodiversity Centre (SBC) researchers as a basis for producing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

“Our scientists have discovered a material from palm oil known as palm fatty acid distillate (PFAD), which will become a raw material to produce aircraft fuel.

“Our AirBorneo will use aircraft fuel produced in Gedong. Sarawak will produce this SAF because this is new technology, and it was discovered by our own scientists at SBC,” he said at the Gedong District Aidilfitri Gathering 2026 held at the Satria Pertiwi Complex on Friday (Apr 17), as reported by the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas).

Abang Johari, who is also Gedong assemblyman, said that this will not only utilise Sarawak’s natural resources, but also boost Sarawak’s position in green technology development and alternative energy industries.

At the same time, it is also expected to elevate the State’s economy while supporting infrastructure development.

Meanwhile, the Premier also revealed that Japan is planning to expand algae cultivation.

During the event, he presented certificates extending the appointments of Gedong district community leaders, as well as certificates of appreciation to former community leaders in recognition of their service and contributions to the community.

Among those present were the Premier’s daughter, Dayang Norjihan; Sarawak Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah; Sarawak Minister of Utilities and Telecommunications, Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi; Deputy Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development (Infrastructure Development), Datuk Aidel Lariwoo; Adviser to the Sarawak Ministry of International Trade and Investment and Special Representative to the Gedong assemblyman, Dato Sri Mohd Naroden Majais; Batang Sadong MP, Rodiyah Sapiee; and Samarahan Division Resident, Mohamad Irwan Bahari Bujang. — DayakDaily
