Sarawak edge host Selangor 12-10 for first-ever Sukma women’s water polo gold

SHAH ALAM, Aug 17: Sarawak once again made history when it won its first gold medal in the women’s water polo event at the Selangor 2026 Malaysia Games (Sukma) after defeating hosts Selangor 12-10 in the final at the Darul Ehsan Aquatic Centre here today.

According to TVS, the Sarawak team got off to a strong start, dominating the first three quarters by leading 4-2 in the first quarter, followed by a 2-1 score in the second quarter, before the third quarter ended 3-3.

Selangor attempted a comeback in the final quarter, winning it 4-3, but Sarawak remained ahead to seal a 12-10 victory.

The achievement saw Sarawak claim its first gold medal in the sport’s history after the event had not been contested at the Games for 13 years.

The victory also marked a new chapter for the Bumi Kenyalang women’s water polo squad, which successfully brought home gold as the event made its return to Sukma.

As of 11.38am today, Sarawak has secured 21 medals with six gold, four silver, and 11 bronze.

The State currently places sixth place behind Penang, which also won 21 medals and six gold but was ahead of Sarawak by one silver medal.

Selangor is currently at first place with 28 medals comprising 11 gold, nine silver, and eight bronze, followed by Terengganu with 31 medals (ten gold, 15 silver, six bronze), and Johor with 26 (eight gold and silver, ten bronze). — DayakDaily
