KUCHING, Oct 18: An announcement on the incentives for Sarawak medal-winners at the Malaysia Games (Sukma) 2026 is expected to be made soon, says Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu.
“We will wait until next week. I think the Premier (Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg) or the minister (Minister for Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development Sarawak Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah) will announce the incentives for our Sukma winners this time.
“We are hoping for good news,” he said when speaking to reporters after the Sukma Appreciation Dinner and Sarawak Aquatics Anniversary Awards Ceremony here on Saturday (Oct 17), as reported by the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas).
However, Gerald said the amount to be announced had yet to be determined, including whether the rates would be similar to those given at previous editions of Sukma.
He said rewarding athletes was one way of recognising their commitment, discipline, and sacrifices in bringing honour to Sarawak on the national sporting stage.
At Sukma 2026, Sarawak’s contingent finished fourth overall, laying the foundation for stronger athlete development and preparation for upcoming competitions.
Meanwhile, he reaffirmed the Sarawak government’s continued commitment, through the relevant ministry and sports agencies, to strengthening sports development, including recognising the contributions of coaches and officials who play important roles behind athletes’ success. — DayakDaily
