KUCHING, Nov 1: Sarawak is planning to implement its own education assessment system as part of its efforts to enhance the quality of education in the State.

Education, Innovation, and Talent Development (MEITD) Sarawak Minister Datuk Seri Roland Sagah Wee Inn emphasised that having the State’s own student performance measurement would be essential for assessing the potentials and strengths of students, TVS reported.

Sagah was quoted by TVS as saying, “For us in Sarawak, we will have to work something out to have our own assessment system, as we believe this is the only way for us to know the ability and performance of our students.

“It plays a major role when it comes to streaming of students towards Science and Arts Stream, otherwise you will have students going to school and not knowing what their potentials are.”

The MEITD minister said this when met by reporters after officiating at the opening of the International Conference on Education Research and Innovation (ICERI) 2023 in Kota Samarahan on Tuesday (Oct 31).

According to the news outlet, Sagah said this in response to a statement made by Federal Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek, who stated that the Education Ministry is adamant about not reviving the Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) despite calls from parents, in particular, for it to be reinstated as a measure of their children’s achievement at the primary school level.

“Let the Federal government sustain their policies, as far as the national level is concerned, but we want to have our own,” he added.

As reported by TVS, the Education Ministry is currently focusing on the 2027 School Curriculum Implementation Survey to develop the new school curriculum for a brighter future in education. — DayakDaily
