SHAH ALAM, Sept 1: Sarawak youth could get an early head start in entrepreneurship through a new economic empowerment programme planned by the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM) in Santubong during the school holidays.
TVS reported that KPWKM Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said the programme is being planned with the Sarawak Education Department (JPN), with the school holidays being considered to avoid disrupting school sessions.
“The planning is already in place, but the date has yet to be confirmed as the students are still in school, and we are looking at the possibility of implementing it during the school holidays,” she said after officiating the 2026 National Women’s Day Programme organised by the Women’s Leadership Foundation (WLF) in collaboration with CelcomDigi here today.
Nancy said initial discussions with JPN Sarawak had begun, although the haze situation in Kuching would also be considered when determining the implementation date.
She said the programme would focus on skills children could learn and eventually turn into products they could monetise.
“We have identified several products that they can learn to make and eventually monetise.
“These skills need to be shared with young people and children so that they can chart their own paths in the future,” she said.
Nancy said the initiative also aimed to equip children with soft skills and provide early exposure to career and entrepreneurship opportunities.
Meanwhile, in her speech, she said efforts to empower the next generation should begin at a young age, including by encouraging girls to explore technology, develop digital skills, and build confidence in decision-making.
“Children should also be encouraged to recognise their potential so that they can contribute to the country’s digital economy and take on leadership roles in the future.
“The skills provided need to lead to suitable employment opportunities, while women returning to work after a career break should be given support and recognition for their experience,” she said. — DayakDaily
